*We are not selling moon cakes this year*
Mid-Autumn Festival, Zhongqiu Jie (中秋節) in Chinese, also known as the Mooncake Festival or Moon Festival, is one of China’s biggest holidays. The festival is a joyous celebration with family reunions, mooncakes , parades, and lanterns. Every year it is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese calendar. This year it falls on September 10th (Saturday). Mid-Autumn Festival is also a popular observance (but with different names) in many other Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Rabbit in the Moon Legend:
Three immortals reincarnated themselves into three poor, elderly people and begged food from a fox, a monkey and a rabbit. The fox and monkey both gave food to the immortals. However, the rabbit did not have any food. It then said to the immortals: “you can eat me” and jumped into the fire. The immortals were so moved by the rabbit that they sent it to the moon to become an immortal jade rabbit. Ever since then, the Chinese jade rabbit stays in the Moon Palace to accompany Chang E and creates immortal medicine for those living in the heaven. This is “rabbit in the moon legend”, also known as “jade rabbit story”.
